The American newspaper The New York Times reported that President Claudia Sheinbaum's cell phone was hacked shortly after Mexico extradited 29 drug traffickers to the United States on February 27. According to sources cited by the media, the Mexican leader's device was compromised after the delivery of the drug lords, among whom are leaders of the Zetas and Rafael Caro Quintero, accused of the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
When consulted about the alleged hacking, the presidential spokesperson declined to comment.
The information was revealed in a report titled “You are tough': how Sheinbaum won Trump's praise,” published on March 14 and signed by Natalie Kitroef, head of the NYT office in Mexico City. The newspaper described the extradition of the 29 drug lords as one of Sheinbaum's most “daring” actions and “probably the most drastic” against organized crime.
According to the NYT, the measure represented a significant blow to criminal groups and demonstrated Sheinbaum's determination in the fight against drug trafficking.
The report highlights that President Trump has praised Sheinbaum, even calling her a “wonderful woman.” “Trump has lavished praise on Sheinbaum, even while criticizing more seasoned world leaders. He has described her as a ‘wonderful woman’ with whom he has a ‘very good’ relationship,” notes the NYT.
